We are pleased to announce the 13th Annual Tcl/Tk conference (Tcl'2006), sponsored by Noumena Corporation , Digital Smarties , Eolas Technologies and ActiveState .
Experiments at the National Superconducing Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State Univeristy (NSCL/MSU) require the ability to access a wide variety of electronics housed in VME bus backplanes. While the main data flow of an experiment requires software that is highly tuned for performance, a number of slow control applications are often running at the same time. This paper will describe Vme a very small Tcl extension that provides access to the VME backplane.
A short tutorial on the VME bus will be presented. The design goals of the extension are described. The VME interface hardware on which it has been implemented are also described. I will survey some of the applications that have been implemented in pure Tcl on top of this extension by myself and experimenters at the NSCL/MSU.
